The LEO Calendar Dance

The LEO Calendar Dance

Let me check my calendar. And my husband’s schedule. And his training calendar. And his court calendar.

Tell me you’ve been here too?

You get invited to a summer bbq, on a Saturday afternoon, when everyone else is off work for the weekend. Except your LEO. And the only way for him to attend would be to take vacations days. (Hard pass for anyone trying to save for an actual family vacation)

Have You Perfected Your Deflection… I Mean Response?

The reality is that my schedule has evolved to revolve around his. This isn’t everyone’s reality but it is mine. I’ve gotten to the point where I can’t commit on the spot to any event unless I want to commit to going alone. Because besides his rotating work shift, most weeks he has training on some of his days off, possibly overtime shifts I don’t know about, and more than likely court scheduled, on duty and off. It makes for a hectic existence sometimes.

How Do You Handle This With Friends?

We’ve been distanced from people who we thought we’re friends because of it. I’ve personally lost friends who don’t understand why I can’t be available during normal hours. There are no normal hours for a police wife, because there are no normal hours for our spouses.

My other reality is that I’d rather spend a chill day at home with my LEO than away from him at Public functions. We don’t see each other enough, and half the time when he’s on night shift we don’t even sleep in the same bed at the same time.

So my work as his wife is creating a space at home where we can relax, chill, and connect as a family. Because those moments matter most.
