Hello, I’m .5. – An Inside Introduction To Police Wife Life

Hello everyone! Welcome to my space on the internet. I’m a 12 year police wife with some knowledge to share. It’s been on my heart for awhile now to bring light to what it’s like as a police family. You might think you know but you really don’t, unless you’re a part of it.

This is my completely anonymous, candid attempt to show you a glimpse into what it’s like to live this life 24/7/365. Because our spouse never truly gets a break. And when 2 become 1, that means we’re on the hook too.

I’m here to humanize police wife life. I’ll do it honestly, maybe a little sarcastically, with humor, and with empathy for the plight and pride of police wives everywhere.

But just know, my experiences are my own. You have every right, and privilege, to react differently when given the same circumstances.

What’s With The “Hello .5”?

After 12 years, I recently found out that sometimes we’re referred to on radio as a “.5”. So our husbands call # plus .5. How did I not know that?!

And Now… a Story

My husband has ALWAYS cautioned me to NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES try to use his status as a LEO to try and get out of tickets if I’m pulled over. Basically If I get pulled over there’s a reason and I deserve what I get, and if I were to name drop then I deserved a ticket on principle. I tend to agree and I would never even think of trying to do that. But sometimes in my head I think about what I would say if they ask me if my husband is an officer. (Here’s the candid part.) I’ve been asked a few times. And every time I scramble to find a way to be honest without seeming like I’m trying to get out of a ticket. Because that’s not my heart. When I confirm my husband is an officer, my heart is that they’ll know that they’re on a “safe stop”. That they don’t have to wonder if it’s going to go sideways if they let their guard down. It’s the same reason I ALWAYS pull into a parking lot or big turnout if I’m pulled over. So they’re not hanging their behinds out on the side of the road where they can get sideswiped.

I’ll do whatever it takes to keep them as safe as I have the power to control. Because I’d want that for my LEO when he’s in a similar situation.
