Living A Police Officer’s Calling

Living A Police Officer’s Calling

I don’t even know how to make this seem not selfish. So let’s just call it what it is. I’m so insanely proud of you. But there are times I wish this wasn’t your calling.

The fact that you run towards danger. The fact that you train extra to be proficient so that you can come home safely every night. (Or morning). The moral standards you hold yourself to, even when the world drags your names through the mud.

But There’s More…

But also the fact that I’ve seen you jump out of bed and run out of the house at a phone call, leaving me praying and crying at the top of the stairs (I held off long enough you wouldn’t see me), that I’ve walked through the aftermath of multiple OIS’s at your side, that you’ve come to kids sports events directly from range so you won’t miss anything, and possibly scared some parents from the sight of your thigh rig, glock with red dot still attached to your leg.

I’m so proud that you’ve come home every day of your career and give us your best. I’m proud that I know you can go hands on with anyone, with confidence. I’m proud that you do what not everyone can. You deal with sights not everyone can stomach. You make jokes to deflect a serious situation and bring comfort to me when we talk about it. You find the right words to soothe our kids when they’re worried about daddy’s job.

I’m Proud Of You

I’m proud of you and I understand your calling. But sometimes, for a minute, I wonder what another job would look like when rested on your shoulders.
