So many “hey I’ll be late” texts or me texting going “should I save you a seat?”

Not only do we miss out on a lot this season as a LEO family, but he misses out on so much too. You never really WANT to sit through a 2 1/2 hour long Christmas musical until you can’t.

We try to be patient, and create our special memories in the pockets of time we get together. But really, if Karen at the school play gives me the death stare one more time for saving a seat for my LEO in hopes he can make it, I might lose my Christmas cheer on her.

Bankers hours start to look really good when you’re 2 weeks out from Christmas and you STILL don’t know if he’s working or not.

This happened to us last night.

I was trying not to be paranoid but we were out with our kids, and where we sat, a guy kept giving us a weird look and moved a few tables down.

I didn’t mention it to my LEO but I was keeping an eye on him. A little while later I was talking with my LEO off to the side and he goes “I arrested that guy.”

It’s all making sense 😅

And on today, when we’re sitting down to give thanks, and intentionally finding the good, these “friends, acquaintances, family” still can’t see past a badge to a heart.

They don’t see the calling placed on our LEOs lives to protect and serve. They don’t see them as human and capable of error. We are all flawed.

But if they’re telling a LEO wife to their face that all cops are bad, what do they say when you’re not at the table?

Ladies, today I’m grateful for you. The wives behind the badge. Thank you for holding your tongue when those haters spout off. Thank you for rising above, for supporting from the shadows. Thank you for packing lunches, bringing forgotten gear, making dinners and saving plates to reheat.

Thank you for stepping aside so he can be a leader at home and stepping up when he’s working yet another holiday shift. Just thank you. We’re the reason some of our guys can stay in the career so long. Our support. You might not see it now, but you’re working every day to help keep those positions filled and show future officers that it can be done. You can follow your calling, be a LEO, and have a thriving family.

We tend to work best last minute these days. If we’re sitting around the house we’ll sometimes text a bunch of people and it turns into a casual bonfire night, which is really fun because there’s no expectations to perform on anyone’s part.

Going from 60 mph to 30 like you saw a state trooper.

My LEO can tell when I’m stressed and sometimes will willingly try to take care of everything while I grab a few hours to myself. I love him for that, but you never know when that call is going to come, so I’ve learned to be flexible.

Finishing up a half cooked dinner, jumping in mid bedtime routine, and sometimes even finding a ride home from dinner out because he had to leave “RIGHT NOW”.

I only start to get irritated when he drives code in my mom wagon and I end up having to replace the brake rotors… again. I’ve thought about asking my local mechanic for a punch card 😝

If you’re new to this game, you might be struggling with the schedule.

I did at first, and I don’t remember handling it very well. At one point I completely checked out of even telling him what our family plans were because I always assumed he wouldn’t be able to come anyways. PSA to the new LEO wife, that’s probably a bad way to handle it.

Every family will find what works for them, but we’ve found that looking at his schedule about a week at a time really helps to keep us both in the loop with what’s going on. We make sure his trainings and special duties are in our shared calendar (thank you iCal) and any important family functions are as well. Then when an extra shift comes up, we know what the availability is.

Also, your department will probably handle holiday shifts differently than ours. There are a few holidays here where the whole department is mandated to work. On those holidays we don’t get to see him, and are used to it. So we make our plans and then tell him what we’ll be doing in case he gets cut loose early and can join. Otherwise I have myself prepped for the solo adventure.

I never expect him to get off early and I’ve learned not to rely too much on him for kids appointments because inevitably he’ll get held over and I’ll have to drop everything to make it happen. I’ve accepted that scheduling kids appointments for when it works for me and just taking on that responsibility helps our family out. Then when he is available to help with them, it’s a nice surprise instead of a letdown when he can’t!

So to the LEO wife struggling with the schedule, you’re in good company. 12 years in and it’s still something we address daily.

What’s the craziest place your LEO has gotten called out from?

We’re not even safe at the lake.

One time, we were in the middle of the lake fishing in our little tiny aluminum fishing boat with a trolling motor. He got a text, and I’ve never seen that boat move so fast across the lake. We rolled up to the dock like we owned it, he ran up to grab the truck while I secured everything in the boat, we threw the kids in the truck and took off. This was after he cut off 3 boats cruising up to the dock and backed up around 2 trucks waiting in line at the boat ramp. Cue the dirty looks 😅

We got home and he pulled into the driveway, jumped in my car because it was parked at the end with all of his gear, and drove my mom wagon like he stole it to get on scene. We ended up having to pay for new brake rotors after that trip.

In the meantime I’m trying to be business as usual, gutting fish, making dinner, and supervising bedtime with a couple spun up boys who had the ride of their life.

And all he wants to do is sleep… and then tell the kids what they need to get done around the house.

This is something I struggled with even talking to my LEO about, because I know he feels like he misses out on so much and that was his way of trying to help me out. But ladies, if you wanna have the type of marriage that thrives and not get stuck in resentment for when the kids get mad at dad for always telling them what they haven’t done yet, you have to speak up and tell him when he’s being NOT helpful.

My kids just want to see HIM, and not be marched around the house like soldiers cleaning their room and taking out the trash and splitting wood and putting away laundry.

So we sat down and I had to let him know that I’m OK with things being undone around the house to an extent if that means he can focus on quality time with the kids and me when he’s here. Don’t worry dad, mama’s on top of the chores.

And we talked with the kids about being more consistent with their chores when dads at work so that they can have that time when he’s home. Everyone steps up a little bit and it makes a much more relaxed home for us! 🙌

But also… that schedule. Can we talk about how it seems that every department is understaffed, underpaid, always hiring, and always has overtime shifts available? I know not everyone wants to do this job, and that’s ok. But there’s gotta be more people out there that do and just haven’t stepped up yet!! Come on, we’re waiting on you! Not everyone can sleep for 24 hrs on a fireman’s shift… kidding! 💀 💀 💀

Sometimes I like to bring lunch to him, eat with him really quick, and be on my merry way if I’m going to be in the area.

I used to try and plan it out and give him a heads up that I’d be there at 12 or whenever… but I stopped doing that.

Every time I would try to plan, he would get busy, and more often than not, I’d find myself eating twice the amount of street tacos I would if I was sharing, from the parking lot of the PD, in my car like a creeper. Is that a problem? Nope… except there’s less room in my wine pouch if there’s tacos taking all the space 🤣🤣🤣

Don’t be disappointed ladies if your best laid plans leave you eating alone. A couple extra tacos to yourself won’t kill ya.

Now, I call him on my way to get food and see if he’s available RIGHT NOW for a quick lunch. If he is, I grab some extra and head his way. This works way better to manage that expectation and leaves me not feeling stood up!

Ok this one’s funny.

Shortly after my LEO got out of training, he responded to a call where a person was passed out and the persons dog wasn’t letting anybody close to them. During the course of getting her to wake up and realizing she was fine besides being on a wicked bender, my LEO was bitten by her dog.

Later he comes home and casually mentioned he had to follow the protocol and get tested. (It’s been 12 years since this happened so I don’t remember all the specifics, but I DO remember what I said…)

“You might have rabies?! You know, I was fully prepared for you to call and say you were in an incident, or hurt or whatever, but I never thought we couldn’t have sex because you got bit by a dog!”

Sorry not sorry for that one.

When you walk into a room and your LEO tells you that… it basically means he doesn’t want anyone to know what he does.

I used to be pissed about this, because I’m so insanely proud of him, why WOULDN’T we tell people what he does? Well duh Linda, not everyone likes cops. So we’ve learned to gauge our audience.

We see them as heroes. They see them as obstacles to be eliminated. It’s as easy as that. And their job is to be better than the person trying to eliminate them.

So we get really good at gauging a room. How much info is ok to give? Have I said too much? Do I need to reign it in? These are all questions going through my mind out in public.

I always hate those days he comes home and tells me there’s another restaurant we can’t eat at because he arrested another cook on drug charges.

In our world, it’s a lot more difficult to find a place for date night because besides good food it needs to be a spot he hasn’t visited while on duty. Some of my old favorite spots are off limits.

How do you adjust date night if you can’t visit your favorites? I’d rather grab deli burritos from the grocery store and throw a blanket down at the beach than get a loogie burger.
